First Impressions of Strawberry Hill House or What I Did On My Holidays

Well it isn’t quite as bad as all that, indeed you could argue that it was entirely a work-related escapade, or at least that it was for research purposes. In short, I went (accompanied by the [...]

The Storyteller

Well, you learn something new every day. I learned a few days ago that this last week was National Storytelling Week: thank you Twitter. Philip Pullman once said that every teacher ought to be [...]

Thanks are due (not for the first time) to the wonderful @jenettajames for recommending the Poldark books to me. Perfect lockdown reading they turn out to be! Until I was about 5, I pretty much grew up in Poldark country, yet somehow I never read the books.
Two books in, with this huge series, I am thoroughly enjoying them. Ross Poldark: home from America in 1783, taking on the failing family farm and restarting a tin mine, all while finding that the woman he loves is engaged to his cousin, then finding love again. Swoon!
Graham is superb on class tension. Bodice tipping and Cornish cliffs are more than balanced by the wealth of Cornish history that Winston Graham brings to the books, whilst (crucially) wearing it lightly. If you thought that the tribulations of Cornish miners and the vicissitudes of the 18th century tin trade weren’t your thing: try it anyway! (there’s a nice whiff of Germinal here). I loved the tv series and thus the book covers but I know the area which makes the romantic covers rather funny. Ross Poldark on horseback on the cliff tops would have to be about 100 feet high (though some of us could undoubtedly get behind the idea of a 100 foot statue of that nice Mr Turner ...) Where was I? Ah yes, the rocks he is staring at are (unless I am mistaken) the Brisons. I could see them from my window as a child and was sure witches lived there. Then, as an adult, I read in a guide book that they are known for looking like General de Gaulle lying in his bath: there went the magic. Anyway cracking good read and easy to swallow up fifty pages in the bath and find that it’s 1am and the water’s cold. Fair definition of a good book I reckon. Have you read all/ any of them? What did you think?

I am developing a theory about the white rose in the yew tree, which is rambling rector, as I suspect all you gardeners guessed. I think it lives in fear of being prosecuted under the trade descriptions act for being insufficiently rambling and is therefore doing its utmost to live up to its name. It is also hell bent on reaching the top of the yew tree (which is around a thousand years old). I do not think it is going to take anything like a millennium for the rose to manage this ... I think this rose is about thirty years old. Does anyone know how long they go on for? The idea of someone (who is not going to be me) having to shimmy up the yew tree to disentangle dead rambling rector makes me go weak at the knees. Hope everyone is having a good weekend.
